You’ve always felt self-conscious about your overbite. Even if no one has commented on it directly, you think it draws the wrong kind of attention to your smile. Fortunately, you can correct your bite without getting metal braces. In other words, Invisalign can be used to fix a misaligned bite!

But why should you worry about resolving a bite problem? How does Invisalign work to correct it? Read on to find out!

Why Is a Misaligned Bite Worth Fixing?

Aside from aesthetics, there are plenty of reasons you should correct a bite problem. If your upper and lower teeth don’t match up properly, eating can become significantly harder than it should be. You may be unable to bite or chew efficiently, potentially leading to digestive distress, jaw pain, headaches, and other unpleasant symptoms. In addition, your teeth may wear down more quickly, which means you may face dental pain or damage and costly repairs.

On the other hand, if your bite is properly aligned, you can comfortably eat your food into small enough bits for digestion and have a more appealing appearance.

What Bite Problems Can Invisalign Fix?

Invisalign can be used to alter bite misalignment for those who have one of the following situations:

  • Overbite.
  • Crossbite.
  • Underbite.
  • Open bite.

Keep in mind that clear aligner treatment works only on mild to moderate cases, but that means that most people can qualify for it!

How Invisalign Fixes Bite Problems

The methods used to correct bite misalignment will vary depending on the severity, the age of the patient, and other factors. However, one treatment technique, meant primarily for teens and adults, involves using small attachments that hold elastics, drawing teeth in the direction they need to go to be better aligned.

If a bite problem is diagnosed and treated while the patient is still young, the lower jaw can actually be shifted forward (in the case of an overbite) with wing-like plastic, mandibular adjustments near the molars. These wings guide the jaw into its proper position as it develops. Once this process is complete, usually at age 12 or 13, elastics become necessary to correct an overbite.

In the end, if you have an uneven or misalign bite, you shouldn’t try to ignore it. It’s worthwhile fixing it, and you don’t have to sacrifice your appearance while doing it. Through Invisalign, you can make important changes to your bite and still look your best!
